Welfare and Insurance

The safety and welfare of your horse is of upmost importance, and while any journeys you book via HorseboxHub are agreed between you and the transporter directly, we recommend asking for a copy of the transporter’s current insurance details and DEFRA approvals.

You may find it helpful to know that there are two types of horse transporters:

Type 1: Transporters can look after horses in transit for under eight hours

Type 2: Transporters can look after horses in transit for over eight hours

We recommend asking to see copies of the following documentation from the horse transporter before confirming the job:

  • Animal transporter authorisation, issued by the Animal & Plant Health Agency
  • Hire and reward insurance
  • Certificate of competence for drivers and attendants
  • Breakdown cover for horse transport
  • Care custody & control insurance
